In the story being able to write allows Christy to express himself, and gives him a way to communicate with others, which he wouldn't be able to do if he wasn't able to write.
The main reason for this is Christy's mother for supporting Christy and not giving up on him and realizing his potential despite his disability. Which makes her the hero of this story. People like Christy who overcome their huge disabilities teach others that even though they have similar disabilities, anyone can achieve and get past the obstacles in their life. The story of Christy and his disabilities being overcome indicates that even though someone has a serious disability that limits them, they can break down that barrier and communicate in ways they otherwise couldn't.
